onebee Year One Overhaul

Organizing the Redesign 04.18.05

It's begun: the big push to update onebee with all the features I ever wished it would have. (You can read along with me in your book; just turn the page whenever the chimes ring, like this!)

Fill your day with Picture Pages! 04.18.05

For those of you knuckleheaded enough to be considering a future in web design, this ought to be enough to slap that notion out of your minds! I spent the entire day working on this one page (minus the hours from 8-6 when I was diligently working at my day job, of course!).

A Gala Day 04.19.05

As predicted, the gallery page was easier since it built on the framework established by the individual page. This one only took about half a day.

On Iteration 04.20.05

Since I'm in all-redesign all-the-time mode, I've been clicking on the blog links that refer to the design process a little more often than I usually do.

Stop the Presses! 04.23.05

Work on the onebee overhaul continues at a furious pace.

"Buzzworthify" bookmarklet 04.27.05

As I mentioned before, one of the new ways that I'm motivating myself to complete the onebee overhaul as quickly as possible is by making the new system so much easier and more fun to use that my desire to switch over to a new and better future compels me to finish the work as fast as I can.

Search! 05.09.05

Last week, the focus of my redesign shifted from the editing tools to the search feature. It looks like it will still be a while before these functionalities are finalized and made public, but when they are, searching this site will be a lot faster and more powerful.

Linkification 05.12.05

The redesign continues – an update on how the additions and revisions to the administrative pages are going to make things a lot better for me personally, and the site in general.

Comments, Login, and Ajax 06.17.05

Another update on the progress of the redesign. Featuring: capitulation to the masses, cookie-based login, and an in-depth discussion of Ajax – the frisky little web trend that's taking the 'net by storm.

Buzzworthy: On The March! 06.17.05

As I've mentioned before, the new onebee will support comments for the Buzzworthy links in addition to polls and columns and all the other wonderful stuff you can comment on now. The first step in activating this feature is coming up with a page layout to display a link along with its comments and related items.

Thinking About Photo Galleries 06.21.05

Today, Jason Kottke (the Internet's most famous full-time blogger) announced the redesign of his site's photo album feature.

DreamHost infinite hosting 07.06.05

Back in November, I moved onebee from the servers of WestHost (which previously hosted the site for over 4 years) to the sunny, shiny, California-based DreamHost.

Mastering the photo tool 07.15.05

Recently, I've tackled a few of the items that will be new or drastically different in the new onebee (like the link pages), but the looming obstacle was still the administrative back-end for photos.

Making speedy deliveries day by day 07.21.05

All right, kiddies! Say you have an object that represents a photo gallery image and you want to make sure that it displays at the proper size.

Related Photo Flicker, Ajax 07.27.05

With the photos and galleries working, it's time to focus on some of the more complex features that have been held up by their dependence on the photos and galleries.

Reviews 08.04.05

Eagle-eyed readers might have already noticed that the onebee navigation options will be changing from "Writing About Online Creative" to "Writing Photos Reviews About" in the near future.

JavaScript, I loathe you 08.08.05

The vast majority of items in the reviews database will not include a formal write-up. There will be more than 500 items and I don't have time to go back and review 'em all!

Labor Day. Drop Dead. No Excuses. 08.29.05

Work on the re-bee has been progressing despite the lack of updates.

Wikifying the FAQ wiki 09.01.05

If you saw The Aviator (ha ha!), there's that stuff towards the end where DiCaprio is pretty much batshit insane and he's focusing on bizarre minutiae to the detriment of his own hygiene and ability to lead a normal life. (Presumably; I didn't see The Aviator. (ha ha!))

Guess what? Excuses! 09.06.05

I really wanted to finish today, and I got very close. But the data entry portion of the process took much, much longer than I thought, which left no time for the QA on Windows browsers.

V-Bee Day 09.07.05

We should have some sort of scavenger hunt to see who can find all the new features. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new site.

Comment Notification 09.07.05

A few of you (a very, very few) have made use of the comment notification checkboxes on onebee. They occur under every comment input box, and there's another checkbox in the Profile Editor which is kind of the über-checkbox: check that bad boy and you get e-mail automatically whenever anyone replies to any comment you leave on onebee.

Photo Improvements 09.08.05

If I die of a premature cardiac arrest, you can be damn sure that CSS and Win/IE 6 are to blame.

Comments Bug 09.08.05

A number of readers noticed that when submitting new comments, there is an inconsistency in the display of personal information (name, e-mail address).
