Fascinated by his prescient and outspoken political expressions, I found myself reading Zappa’s autobiography, and later Moon’s, which capture very different sides of his personality and career. This film hews closer to Frank’s take, naturally—in fact the children are almost completely absent, even though Ahmet is listed as a producer (perhaps owing to their intense feud). It’s an interesting profile of his struggles with fame, culture, and perfectionism, and of an enthralling visionary who was hard to love but commanded great loyalty from those close to him.
