The visual style is really strong for a documentary, and adds an excellent dynamic (the choppy ’90s editing, not so much). The four guys vary in terms of their charisma, and lion-taming turns out to be less riveting than mole rats, but it’s hard not to be won over by anyone talking in depth about the subject that captivates them. This is my first experience with Errol Morris’s Interrotron approach, and it makes a striking difference. The speakers feel more like narrators (à la Annie Hall) than interview subjects.
