You open with an Iron Giant homage, you’re gonna win my heart. Fortunately, this film has heart to spare—almost too much, at times—but even if the themes can be heavy-handed, the gorgeous visuals, charming performances (Nyong’o and Pascal, especially), and clever plot make it a winner. It’s energetic, right from the start, and it takes a winning approach to the “talking animals” dynamic.
