It certainly isn’t swift or lean, but it doesn’t feel overlong—it explores an intriguing (if impenetrable) character, and each of its layers is relevant to the narrative and the emotion. (Perhaps I’m the wrong one to judge, since I could watch architects talk about design for hours.) Guy Pearce has barely aged a day, and, goddamn, he’s magnetic in this role. Felicity Jones felt like an unusual choice, but she’s very strong and her emotional range is a welcome contrast to Brody’s in the second half.
