It’s undeniably creative, with interesting ideas to explore, even if it isn’t as finished or satisfying as it might have been. Gascón delivers a tender and thoughtful performance that isn’t afraid to draw on her telenovela roots when the scene demands it. Maybe it wouldn’t have captured our attention so much any other year, but right now a transgender woman, who’s from Mexico, and who uses her limitless wealth for public good instead of self-enrichment? It feels like a fork in the eye of a certain someone Oscar voters love to hate—cheers to that!
