Masterful performances from Fiennes and Lithgow—from everyone, really—demonstrating what great actors can do with performance alone. They’re in dopey gilded outfits and heavy robes, so there’s no “action” to speak of; following strict traditions and protocols, so most dialogue scenes are 100% subtext. It’s just faces and talking, and it’s absolutely gripping. Berger makes savvy directorial choices, too, especially pivotal scenes that are lit like Renaissance paintings.
