Stirring melodrama and procedural, strategic, and military intrigue develop side-by-side without the story feeling fractured. Farrar delivers subtlety when called for, and more fragility than a lot of male leads of the era. The subversive depiction of military bureaucracy and cronyism is impressive, considering the industry had only just emerged from an era in which even the best war pictures were propaganda first, everything else second. Renée Asherson dazzles in a small, unshowy role.
