It takes itself a bit too seriously for me to ever warm to it entirely, but Redford is charming as hell, and Brimley’s Pop Fisher is an absolute hoot. I’ll give Deschanel ample credit for capturing some glorious imagery, and take a little credit away from Levinson and Towne for flattening Hobbs’s baseball performance into a stark dichotomy of endless strikeouts or smashing the shit out of ballparks, with no in-between.
