Considering how continuously it was rewritten to update its treatment of war themes, it’s a cohesive and compelling narrative with characters who feel real and relatable. From Wyler, I’d expect nothing less! Garson is terrific; Teresa Wright is never less than mesmerizing. It weaves together a handful of excellent themes without shifting focus from the family story, and includes the most stirring flower show award scene I've yet seen.
