The island is as much a character as its inhabitants, and McDonagh introduces both with a calm, unhurried appraisal that makes them feel rooted and instantly familiar. The dialogue is fantastic—dull and meandering on the surface, but rich with subtext, and the occasional cutting insight rendered all the more piercing by its contrast with the rest of the mellifluous babble. Kerry Condon is a commanding and mesmerizing presence.
