I like the model train a lot, but for the most part Moore’s braying laughter and constant sloshing wear pretty thin—though the relationship with Gielgud’s wry and witty Hobson does a bit to redeem him. I’m sure it played better in its era, but to me the ending felt unearned and unsatisfying.
