Connolly is magnificent: his quiet moments are so poignant, and his genuine charm and good humor anchor the film in their embrace. The child performances are terrific (especially a young Emilia Jones, whom I’d never have recognized!), and the script and editing flow nicely after an uncertain first few scenes.
