I’d love to see behind-the-scenes footage of Lanthimos working with actors. Are they enthralled by his brilliance? Is it more of an amused trust fall? It’s hard to imagine any of these actors reading this script and saying, “I fully get what you’re going for.” (I’m convinced Dafoe never even reads scripts; he just shows up and nails it, with utter sincerity, at whatever level of creepiness is called for.) Anyway, I wasn’t really sure what to make of this, but it’s undeniably cinematic, mostly interesting, and really impressive how he’s able to capture a recognizable trademark “oddness” across varying styles and contexts.
