The story and the world it’s told in are an unexpected combination—the result may not be flawless, but it’s unique and satisfying. Keaton gets to play some great scenes; he nails the tone well; he avoids hacky, all-too-familiar tropes around memory flashes; and he gets great co-stars. Marcia Gay Harden is perfect in her one scene, and Pacino is very clearly just amusing himself, but in a part where that works to the film’s benefit!
