Has Paul Schrader ever created a protagonist I didn’t hate? Scorsese’s directorial approach is more consistent and confident than in Alice, but the tone is a bit uneven. (Shepherd and Brooks are each excellent, but their scenes really feel like they’re from a different movie.) What a stroke of luck that Jodie Foster fell into Scorsese’s lap a couple of years earlier; I can’t imagine anyone else pulling off this character.
