Nicholson’s performance fits Towne’s dialogue like a glove, and the script and direction do a fine job of making a fairly mundane white-collar conspiracy downright riveting. Huston’s scenes are spectacular, and Jerry Goldsmith—whose scores I normally find uninspired—is in fine form. (Plus, it gave us Forgettingtown, which always leaves me in stitches.)
