It’s hard to think of a Paul Giamatti performance I haven’t loved, but this is definitely one of the best. One of Payne’s, as well. Every character is terrific, and the portrayals are unshowy, intimate, and honest. Da’Vine Joy Randolph richly deserves the attention she’s been getting, but I wish Carrie Preston had been nominated as well. She’s always a pure delight, but her performances seem so effortless I think she ends up being underappreciated.
