Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces

A stirring and fitting profile, wisely split to cover two very different eras of Steve’s life. I found the first part especially fascinating, examining the philosophy behind his comedic approach, and granting a rare glimpse at early performances before he was particularly funny. (You can chuckle at what he was aiming for, knowing the comedic persona he eventually developed—but it’s hard to blame his contemporary audiences for sitting in stone-faced silence.) I’d have loved more stories about his films in the second part, but apparently he’s collected those into an illustrated memoir, instead. That works for me!
