Animated stories that begin with a “storybook” backstory feel frustrating, as do the ones that lean on in-world TV anchors to fill in exposition. Nimona starts with one right after the other. Which is a shame, because after that it’s gangbusters. The initial establishment of Nimona’s character is a bit fitful, but the central relationship is magnificent, the emotional beats are spot-on, and the brilliant animation and vivid style support a very touching and memorable story.
