The writing and directing aren’t very good, which is a shame because Freeman and Ortega are great, and there are some excellent early moments between Miller and his wife and best friend that set up a complex, realistic dynamic and reveal character with natural dialogue. I guess it’s a testament to the actors, because most of the rest is pretty hacky, and seems to feel that its explicitness is so interesting that it removes any obligation to say something relevant or unique.
