Probably my favorite of Steve’s scripts (they’re all great, but I appreciate his sincerity more deeply than his satire). That goes double for his performance, here. C.D. Barnes is a witty character, but Steve never hams it up. The result feels more grounded—like a real person who uses humor as a defense mechanism—and prevents the nose from ever feeling silly. (Not that it’s a fair comparison at all, but Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor films would be the counterexample.) It’s a shame they couldn’t have gotten a director with a better sense of comedy, though.
