Spielberg got a lot of help from the malfunctioning shark puppet, and a huge boost from John Williams’s inexhaustible genius, but his instinct to focus on Brody’s emotional center as a man and a father was always going to prevent this from becoming just another creature feature. And the editing builds suspense masterfully.
