Pixar still packs an emotional punch like no other, and tackles relatable themes in novel ways. I wish the first half had exhibited more of the confidence, nuance, and narrative complexity of the final act. It starts out very broad, with Miguel’s HUGE dreams and his family’s STRICT rules, more like a Disney Channel movie than a Pixar film. The characters and their motivations are more interesting—why gloss over so much of that until halfway through? posted 11.26.17
