Over the years, Nighy has become a huge favorite, and this restrained and charming portrayal reminds me of The Girl in the Café, one of my earliest and dearest of his works. The throwback style and unique narrative structure give an account that is paradoxically intimate and yet detached, which is fitting for the singular character at its center. Aimee Lou Wood, a wellspring of emotional resonance and empathy on Netflix’s superb Sex Education, is equally excellent here.
