I can’t really explain why I enjoyed this so much. I have a tenderness for Robbie, of course, but it’s more than that. Washington is very good, and Bale and Russell seem to have a great deal of fun crafting specific and unique characters together—and, for my money, the results are always worth watching. Huckabees is the superior film, but even though Amsterdam is on the nose at times, I appreciate its philosophical forays, its clever beats, its tenderness, and its beauty.
