The tone is overly theatrical, the animation is often slapdash, and the character relationships don’t always make a ton of sense. David Hyde Pierce turns in a great performance (he should do more animation), and Martin Short’s high-energy ramblings would be hilarious …in a more fitting role in a better movie. It feels like an attempt to recapture the magic of Robin Williams’s freewheeling semi-improvised work as Genie, but the intensity overwhelms the style of the film and the screen time of a part that’s essentially a cameo.
