An artfully observed and poetic examination of a fascinating and unexpected character in fascinating and unexpected circumstances. Lonergan’s approach to dialogue and characterization is unique and enthralling, and while the film runs long, it never feels languid. Paquin delivers a hell of a performance, as usual, and J. Smith-Cameron and Kieran Culkin are standouts among an excellent supporting cast, bringing depth to their characters in nuanced strokes.
