You’re not going to get Tina Fey and Paul Rudd on screen without a charming and funny outcome—and Fey’s interplay with Lily Tomlin is sensational—but the story here is half-baked, and the tone is distractingly uneven. It feels like the filmmakers couldn’t make the relationship story work alongside the (rather intriguing) contemplations of identity and authenticity, and tried to cover that up by wedging comedy into scenes where it didn’t belong.
