Striking visual choices, from sets and lighting to cinematography, providing an apt framing the story and its often impenetrable language. Washington, McDormand, and the entire cast deliver admirably, striking a fine balance between the theatricality that the plot and dialogue demand and a naturalism that helps us follow the story without Cliff’s Notes. It finishes with a bit of a lull, but I suppose Shakespeare’s tragedies tend to do that, when all that’s left are corpses.
