Attempts to be a madcap comedy, but refuses to sustain a madcap pace. It seems like we join each scene right after a pivotal moment that would explain the characters’ motivation, then linger long after it runs out of anything to say. Reeks of flop-sweat, as though it’s constantly pitching gags and then holding for a laugh that’s not coming. Caine puts in more effort than you’d expect; Sally Field often looks like she’s fulfilling a community service requirement. Guttenberg squeezes every ounce out of his character, as only he can.
