The satire is a bit stiff—in fact, everything about this feels “pushed” about 15% too far, including Gyllenhaal’s wacky, unrestrained performance—but the message resonates well, the visual effects are impressive, and certain farcical sequences are executed with brilliant timing. The narrative thread becomes a bit unfocused at times, but these characters are all fun to play with, so it’s easy to understand how the temptation arose.
