Gyllenhaal displays fine directorial skill for a first-timer, and tackles what was surely a challenging adaptation quite well. Feelings and ideas are allowed to unfold slowly, and the result is an engrossing meditation on how life rarely makes sense or follows a plan, but you can look back and see how the pieces fit together. Colman, and Buckley in particular, are fantastic.
