The leads are charming and spunky and the tone is enjoyable. It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a Sean Penn performance; he seems to be having fun, and that makes a lot of difference. (It’s also kind of fitting that he shows up in a film that owes a lot to Fast Times at Ridgemont High.) Towards the middle, some of the story tangents overstay their welcome and sap the breezy, rollicking momentum of the beginning.
