First of all, if you set an action thriller in the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, you’re going to get my attention. But I love the story here, and the cast, and the design of the world and the plot. I also appreciate Nolan’s approach: putting his investment into subsequent viewings without making the first one completely inscrutable. (No matter how good a film is, you can only watch it for the first time once. For the great ones, there will be many, many subsequent viewings—so let’s make those really sizzle!) It wouldn’t work for every film, but in this case it spares a lot of heavy exposition and MacGuffin talk. Composer Ludwig Göransson continues to impress.
