I’m glad fate caused me to watch this again, because 18-year-old me found it lacking, and it turns out it incorporates nearly everything I’ve come to love about movies in the time since then. It may be a bit crowded (the story between Morton and his son would lift right out) but the intertwined narratives and the authentic sense of place and history are masterful. Sayles unfurls details subtly and his dialogue is natural and honest.
