It’s easy to understand why Scorsese thought it would be fun to remake this, and even easier to understand why he should have left it the hell alone. Mitchum’s performance is pitch-perfect—along with the script, the editing, and the ingenious Herrmann score, it’s a spellbinding example of how to get maximum creepy intensity out of the buttoned-down production code era. Peck and Polly Bergen are fantastic, as well.
