As a timely update to Idiocracy, it starts from a very fertile concept, but despite fine performances from DiCaprio, Lawrence, and Blanchett, the satire feels woefully blunt. I’d expect better from Mike Judge, but I’d expect a LOT better from McKay at this point. He directed Vice brilliantly, but I wish he'd watched a little of Veep—it’s possible to make the same points in a more incisive, less plodding way.
