It’s a puzzling choice for Hanks, and he never quite manages to pull off Finch’s grumpier side—while the film struggles to balance dread and whimsy in its tone, as well. The visuals are seamless, and Landry Jones delivers an endearing performance that owes much to Depp’s Scissorhands.
