Gyllenhaal approaches his character well, and his performance and Fuqua’s direction help convey the trapped and disconnected feeling integral to the film’s intriguing premise. Ultimately, it runs on just a bit too long, and tries too hard to tie in a clunky backstory that doesn’t contribute much.
