The directorial choices are confident, but the visuals are unnecessarily graphic, and the intrigue unfolds with maddening slowness. The uneasiness is established expertly from the very start, so it’s hard to understand why things are paced so haltingly all the way through. Might have been more satisfying if I had a character to root for; instead I was rooting for it to be over.
