I’m no fan of epic tales of legacy, messianic journeys, or interstellar spice trade, but Villeneuve draws me in (as he did with Blade Runner 2049) through his subtle touch, his focus on humanity, and his willingness to cut against the grain when it comes to sound design, and the depiction of futuristic technology. Pacing is a bit choppy at times, but I was rarely lost, which came as a pleasant surprise.
