All of the performances are superb. (Evidence continues to accumulate that Sophia Lillis is, in fact, the real deal.) Some of the writing is a lot more subtle and humane than Alan Ball’s HBO shows, which makes it all the more maddening when the script veers into trite, superficial territory from time to time.
