The idea is really fertile: sort of like Stranger Than Fiction in the frenetic and colorful world of video games, but sadly the film fails to deliver on its potential in every way. Too much time spent in the “real world;” a flat, trite “cringey rich tech guy” character that squanders Waititi’s talents; and motivation that never rings true. Many scenes constrain Ryan Reynolds’s natural charisma, which is tantamount to high treason.
