It's very difficult to think of two prominent film directors with a greater disparity in their craft and the respectability of their work than Stanley Kubrick and Adrian Lyne. This is Lyne at his schlockiest, slimiest worst—nearer to a Schumacher level of campy excess. The story is choppy, the narration is unwelcome yet somehow insufficient, and the performances and timing are unnatural and forced.
