With the exception of production design, it's hard to find a decision Branagh made that I don't disagree with. Even the casting of Judi Dench and Josh Gad, fantastic performers, gravely miscast—as evidenced by the fact that they both have to do a weird, phony voice. Compressing the books into a movie of this scope fragments all narrative, character development, and logic. What remains is a mishmash of cringey visuals, leaden exposition, and overlong battles whose purpose is quickly forgotten.
