The emotional beats are unfocused, the characterizations are inconsistent, and the songs aren't exactly hummable. There are dazzling visuals and a nice message, but it seems like the runaway success of the first film granted a blank check they didn't quite know what to do with and the result lacks a coherent story structure or much musical appeal.
