Kinnear exudes charm in a way only he can, which helps sell one side of the character. Unfortunately, the story is so compressed that the other side is flattened into a unidimensional sleazebag, and saps any nuance from the depiction of his sexuality. The narration is spotty, the dream sequence is hacky (though less so than the opening titles), and the film seems uninterested in understanding Crane—opting instead to treat him as a typical irredeemable pervert.
