Hamill's acting is unpolished and Lucas's dialogue has always been a bit stiff, but Ford and Fisher sparkle, there's a rollicking momentum (right up to the whiplash ending) and there's a considerable amount of detailed world-building that's being done in subtle ways. (Whether it's enough to sustain a franchise spanning five decades is another question.)
