Baumbach is expert at constructing very lived-in relationships, and this cast is downright heavenly. It feels unfair to invoke Woody Allen so often when discussing Baumbach’s work, but Allen’s visual style and dialogue tone are all over the first half of this—and that’s a good thing. Somebody ought to keep that style alive; it’s great! The third act heads in its own direction and loses some of the charm, but luckily enough goodwill has been earned by then to coast a bit.
